Broaștele sunt un grup divers și în mare parte carnivori de amfibieni cu coadă scurtă și fără coadă, care compun ordinea Anura. Cea mai veche fosilă "proto-broască" a apărut în Triassicul timpuriu al Madagascarului, dar datarea ceasurilor moleculare sugerează că originea lor ar putea să se extindă mai departe la Permian, acum 265 milioane de ani. Broaștele sunt distribuite pe scară largă, variind de la tropice până la regiuni subarctice, dar cea mai mare concentrare a diversității speciilor se regăsește în pădurile tropicale. Există aproximativ 4800 de specii înregistrate, reprezentând peste 85% din speciile de amfibieni existente. Ele sunt, de asemenea, una dintre cele cinci ordine vertebrate cele mai diverse. Planul corpului unei broaște adulte este, în general, caracterizat printr-un corp stufos, ochi proeminenți, limbă despicată, membre îndoite de dedesubt și absența unei coadă.
