Grotesc
Cuvântul grotesc provine de la aceeași rădăcină latină ca și "grota", care a provenit din "loc ascuns" din cripta grecească, adică o mică peșteră sau un gol. Sensul original a fost limitat la un stil extravagant al artei decorative antice romane redescoperit și apoi copiat la Roma la sfârșitul secolului al XV-lea. "Peșterile" erau, de fapt, încăperi și coridoare ale Domus Aurea, complexul de palate neterminat inițiat de Nero după Marele Foc al Romei în anul 64 d.Hr., care a devenit îngroșat și îngropat, până când au fost sparte din nou, mai ales de sus. Răspândind de la italian la celelalte limbi europene, termenul a fost folosit de mult timp în mare măsură interschimbabil cu arabesque și moresque pentru tipuri de modele decorative, folosind elemente frunze curbate. De la cel puțin secolul al XVIII-lea, grotescul a ajuns să fie folosit ca un adjectiv general pentru ciudat, fantastic, urât, incongruent, neplăcut sau dezgustător și, astfel, este adesea folosit pentru a descrie forme ciudate și forme distorsionate, cum ar fi măștile de Halloween.
