Hazele sunt un gen de copaci foioase și arbuști mari originari din emisfera nordică temperată. Genul este, de obicei, plasat în familia de mesteacăn Betulaceae, deși unii botanici împărțesc căpșunile într-o familie separată Corylaceae. Fructul de alune este alunul. Hazele au frunze simple, rotunjite, cu margini dublu-serrate. Florile sunt produse foarte devreme în primăvara înainte de frunze și sunt monoeiste, cu catkins de un singur sex, catkins de sex masculin sunt galben pal și 5-12 cm lungime, iar cele de sex feminin sunt foarte mici și în mare parte ascunse în muguri, cu sunt vizibile doar stilurile de culoare roșu luminos și de 1 până la 3 mm. Fructele sunt fructe cu coajă lemnoasă de 1-2,5 cm lungime și cu diametrul de 1-2 cm, înconjurate de un involucru care, în parte, închide complet piulița. Forma și structura involucrului și, de asemenea, obiceiul de creștere sunt importante în identificarea diferitelor specii de alune. Polenul speciilor de căpșuni, care adesea cauzează alergii la sfârșitul iernii sau primăvara devreme, poate fi identificat sub mărire prin exonele lor granulare caracteristice, care poartă trei pori vizibili.
