Insanitatea, nebunia sau nebunia este un spectru de comportamente caracterizate de anumite anormale modele mentale sau comportamentale. Insanitatea se poate manifesta ca încălcări ale normelor societății, inclusiv prin faptul că o persoană devine un pericol pentru ei sau pentru alții, deși nu toate aceste acte sunt considerate nebuni. În utilizarea modernă, nebunia este întâlnită cel mai frecvent ca un termen informal neștiințific care denotă instabilitatea mentală sau în contextul restrâns al apărării de nebunie. În profesia medicală termenul este acum evitat în favoarea diagnosticării tulburărilor mentale specifice; prezența iluziilor sau a halucinațiilor este în general menționată ca psihoză. Când vorbim despre boala mintală în termeni generali, "psihopatologia" este considerată un descriptor preferat. În limba engleză, cuvântul "sane" derivă din adjectivul latinesc sanus sensul "sănătos". Expresia "mens sana in corpore sano" este deseori tradusa pentru a insemna o "minte sanatoasa intr-un corp sanatos". Din această perspectivă, nebunia poate fi considerată o stare proastă de sănătate a minții, nu neapărat a creierului ca organ, ci mai degrabă se referă la funcția defectuoasă a proceselor mentale, cum ar fi raționamentul.
