Romanizarea sau latinizarea - în sensul istoric și cultural al ambelor termeni - indică diferite procese istorice, cum ar fi aculturarea, integrarea și asimilarea populațiilor nou înființate și periferice ale Republicii Romane și Imperiului Roman mai târziu. Istoriografia romană antică și istoriografia italiană până când perioada fascistă a numit aceste diferite procese "civilizația barbarilor". Aculturația a pornit de sus în jos, clasa superioară adoptând mai întâi cultura romană și vechile căi care se aflau mai lungi în districtele îndepărtate dintre țărani. Purtătorii de ostasii au jucat un rol important în acest proces, deoarece copiii de elită, de la Mauretania până la Gaul, au fost luați să fie crescuți și educați la Roma. Istoriografia romană antică și istoriografia tradițională italiană au identificat cu încredere diferitele procese implicate într-o "civilizație a barbarilor". Istoricii moderni au o viziune mai nuanțată: făcând pacea cu Roma, elitele locale ar putea să-și facă poziția mai sigură și să-și consolideze prestigiul.
