Învățarea poate să apară ca urmare a obișnuinței sau condiționării clasice, văzută în multe specii de animale sau ca urmare a unor activități mai complexe, cum ar fi jocul, observat numai în cazul animalelor relativ inteligente. Învățarea poate avea loc conștient sau fără conștiență conștientă.
