Un conac este o casă mare de locuit. Cuvântul însuși derivă din cuvântul latin mansio "locuință", un substantiv abstract derivat din verbul manere "de a trăi". Cuvântul englez "manse" a definit inițial o proprietate suficient de mare pentru ca preotul parohi să se întrețină, dar un conac nu mai este auto-susținut în acest fel. "Manor" provine din aceleași exploatații teritoriale, acordate unui stăpân care rămâne acolo - prin urmare, este ușor să vedem cum a ajuns cuvântul "Mansion" să aibă semnificația sa.
