Masticarea sau mestecarea este procesul prin care alimentele sunt zdrobite și măcinate de dinți. Este primul pas al digestiei si creste suprafata alimentelor pentru a permite o descompunere mai eficienta a enzimelor. În timpul procesului de masticare, mâncarea este poziționată de obraz și de limbă între dinți pentru măcinare. Mușchii de masticare mișcă fălcile pentru a aduce dinții în contact intermitent, blocând și deschizând în mod repetat. În timp ce mestecarea continuă, alimentele devin mai moi și mai calde, iar enzimele din saliva încep să descompună carbohidrații în alimente. După mestecare, alimentele sunt înghițite. Intră în esofag și prin peristaltism continuă până la stomac, unde se produce următoarea etapă a digestiei. Premasticarea este uneori efectuată de părinți umani pentru sugari care nu sunt în măsură să facă acest lucru pentru ei înșiși. Alimentele sunt masticate în gura părintelui într-un bolus și apoi transferate copilului spre consum. Bovine și alte animale, numite rumegătoare, mestecați mâncarea de mai multe ori pentru a extrage mai mulți nutrienți. După prima rundă de mestecare, această mâncare se numește mâncare.
