Un meander, în general, este o îndoire într-un curs de apă sau fluviu sinuos. O meandră se formează atunci când se deplasează apă într-un flux, erodează băncile exterioare și își lărgește valea, iar partea interioară a râului are mai puțină energie și depozitează praful. Un flux de orice volum poate presupune un curs de meandru, alternând erodarea sedimentelor din exteriorul unei curbe și depunerea lor în interior. Rezultatul este un șnur, deoarece fluxul se mișcă înainte și înapoi pe axa inferioară a văii. Când un meandru este îndepărtat de la cursul principal, se formează un lac de oxbow. De-a lungul timpului, meandrele migrează în aval, uneori într-un timp atât de scurt încât să creeze probleme de inginerie civilă pentru municipalitățile locale care încearcă să mențină drumuri și poduri stabile. Nu există încă o consistență sau o standardizare completă a terminologiei științifice utilizate pentru a descrie cursurile de apă. Există o varietate de simboluri și scheme.
