Moresque este un termen alternativ învechit de "maur" în engleză, iar în arte are anumite semnificații specifice. În sine, cuvântul este folosit de formele care se găsesc în ornament și decor în artele aplicate în Europa. Adesea, este un sinonim pentru modelele arabestice sau intercalate în stilurile Mannerist și Mannerist de Nord din secolul al XVI-lea, derivate din ornamentele islamice. A fost definită în 1611 de Dictionarul lui Randle Cotgrave, "Tongue franceză și engleză", ca fiind: "o pictură nepoliticoasă sau antică sau sculptură, în care picioarele și picioarele fiarelor sunt amestecate sau asemănătoare unei fel de frunze sălbatice, \u0026 c. " Cuvântul este, de asemenea, folosit pentru o astfel de figură, pornind ca un om sau animal, dar terminând ca parte a unei scheme decorative de frunziș sau legături geometrice. De fapt, originea unor figuri precum cele descrise de Cotgrave nu vine din lumea islamică, ci din versiunea renascentistă, influențată de stilul decorativ grotesc romantic antic, de ornamente medievale, mai ales în manuscrisele iluminate.
