Nerd este un termen descriptiv, adesea folosit pejorat, indicând faptul că o persoană este prea intelectuală, obsesivă sau afectată social. Aceștia pot petrece o cantitate prea mare de timp pe activități nepopulare, obscure sau non-mainstream, care sunt, în general, fie extrem de tehnice sau legate de subiecte de ficțiune sau fantezie, excluzând mai multe activități de masă. În plus, mulți tocilari sunt descriși ca fiind timizi, ciudați și neatractori și pot întâmpina dificultăți în participarea la sporturi sau chiar în urma acestora. Deși inițial deranjant, "Nerd" este un termen stereotip, dar, ca și în cazul altor pejorative, a fost recuperat și redefinit de unii ca un termen de mândrie și identitate de grup.
