Premisă

O premisă sau o premisă este o afirmație care susține că un argument va induce sau justifica o concluzie. Cu alte cuvinte: o premisă este o presupunere că ceva este adevărat. În logică, un argument necesită un set de două propoziții declarative cunoscute ca premisele, împreună cu o altă propoziție declarativă cunoscută sub numele de concluzie. Această structură a două premise și o concluzie formează structura fundamentală argumentativă. Argumentele mai complexe pot folosi o serie de reguli pentru a conecta mai multe premise la o singură concluzie sau pentru a deduce o serie de concluzii din premisele originale, care apoi servesc ca premise pentru concluzii suplimentare. Un exemplu este folosirea regulilor de inferență găsite în logica simbolică. Aristotel a afirmat că orice argument logic ar putea fi redus la două premise și o concluzie. Anumite locații sunt lăsate neascultate, caz în care acestea sunt numite premise lipsă, de exemplu: Socrate este muritor deoarece toți oamenii sunt muritori. Este evident că o afirmație tacită este că Socrate este un om. Explicația pe deplin exprimată este astfel: Pentru că toți oamenii sunt muritori și Socrate este un om, Socrate este muritor.
