În logică și filosofie, un argument este o încercare de a convinge pe cineva de ceva, dând motive pentru a accepta o concluzie specială ca evidentă. Forma generală a unui argument într-o limbă naturală este cea a premiselor în sprijinul unei creanțe: concluzia. Structura unor argumente poate fi de asemenea prezentată într-un limbaj formal, iar argumentele definite formal pot fi făcute independent de argumentele limbajului natural, cum ar fi matematica, logica și informatica. Într-un argument tipic deductiv, premisele sunt menite să ofere o garanție a adevărului concluziei, în timp ce într-un argument inductiv, ele sunt considerate a furniza motive care susțin adevărul probabil al concluziei. Standardele de evaluare a argumentelor non-deductive se pot baza pe criterii diferite sau adiționale decât adevărul, de exemplu, persuasivitatea așa-numitelor "afirmații indispensabile" în argumente transcendentale, calitatea ipotezelor în re-producere sau chiar dezvăluirea de noi posibilități de gândire și acțiune. Standardele și criteriile utilizate în evaluarea argumentelor și a formelor lor de raționament sunt studiate în logică.

Prima definiție a argumentului din dicționar este o certă; altercaţie. O altă definiție a argumentului este o discuție în care sunt prezentate motive în sprijinul și împotriva unei propuneri, a unei propuneri sau a unui caz; dezbate. Argumentul este, de asemenea, un punct sau o serie de motive prezentate pentru a susține sau a se opune unei propuneri.
