În ramura lingvistică cunoscută sub numele de pragmatică, o presupoziție este o ipoteză implicită despre convingerea mondială sau de fond referitoare la o exprimare a cărei adevăr este luat în considerare în discurs. Exemple de presupoziții includ: ▪ Jane nu mai scrie ficțiune. ▪ Presupposionare: Jane a scris o ficțiune. ▪ Ați oprit consumul de carne? ▪ Presuppositor: ați consumat o dată carne. ▪ Ai vorbit cu Hans? ▪ Presupposionare: Hans există. O presupunere trebuie să fie cunoscută sau asumată de către vorbitor și destinatar pentru a fi considerată adecvată în context. În general, rămâne o ipoteză necesară dacă propovăduirea este pusă sub formă de afirmație, respingere sau întrebare și poate fi asociată cu un element lexic specific sau caracteristică gramaticală în cuvânt. Crud, negarea unei expresii nu-și schimbă presupozițiile: vreau să o fac din nou și nu vreau să o fac din nou, ambele presupun că subiectul a făcut-o deja una sau mai multe ori; Soția mea este însărcinată și soția mea nu este însărcinată, presupunând că subiectul are o soție.
