Îngrijirea medicală preventivă constă în măsuri luate pentru prevenirea bolilor, spre deosebire de tratamentul bolii. Asa cum sanatatea cuprinde o varietate de stari fizice si mentale, la fel si boala si dizabilitatea, care sunt afectate de factorii de mediu, predispozitia genetica, agentii de boala si alegerile stilului de viata. Sănătatea, boala și dizabilitatea sunt procese dinamice care încep înainte ca indivizii să-și dea seama că sunt afectați. Prevenirea bolilor se bazează pe acțiuni anticipative care pot fi clasificate ca prevenire primară, secundară și terțiară. În fiecare an, milioane de oameni mor decedați care pot fi prevenite. Un studiu din 2004 a arătat că aproximativ jumătate din totalul deceselor din Statele Unite din 2000 au fost cauzate de comportamente și expuneri care pot fi prevenite. Printre cauzele principale s-au numărat bolile cardiovasculare, bolile respiratorii cronice, leziunile neintenționate, diabetul și anumite boli infecțioase. Același studiu estimează că în Statele Unite mor anual 400 000 de persoane din cauza dietei proaste și a unui stil de viață sedentar.
