Un refugiat este o persoană care se află în afara țării lor de origine pentru că a suferit persecuție din cauza rasei, religiei, naționalității, opiniei politice sau pentru că sunt membri ai unei categorii sociale persecutate de persoane sau pentru că fug de un război. O astfel de persoană poate fi numită "solicitant de azil" până când va fi recunoscută de către statul în care își face cererea. În 2012, Afganistanul a fost cea mai mare țară sursă de refugiați, unul din patru refugiați din lume fiind un afgan și 95% dintre aceștia trăiesc în Pakistan și Iran.
