Retorica este arta discursului, o artă care urmărește să îmbunătățească capacitatea scriitorilor sau vorbitorilor de a informa, a convinge sau de a motiva anumite audiențe în situații specifice. Ca subiect de studiu formal și o practică civică productivă, retorica a jucat un rol central în tradiția occidentală. Cea mai cunoscută definiție vine de la Aristotel, care consideră că este o parte a logicii și a politicii, și o numește "capacitatea de a observa în orice caz mijloacele de persuasiune disponibile". Retoricii oferă, de obicei, euristică pentru înțelegerea, descoperirea și dezvoltarea argumentelor pentru situații particulare, cum ar fi cele trei apeluri convingătoare ale publicului, logos, patos și etos ale lui Aristotel. Cele cinci canoane ale retoricii, care urmăresc sarcinile tradiționale în conceperea unui discurs persuasiv, au fost mai întâi codificate în Roma clasică: invenție, aranjament, stil, memorie și livrare.
