Scurva este o boală care rezultă din deficiența vitaminei C, care este necesară pentru sinteza colagenului la om. Denumirea chimică a vitaminei C, acidul ascorbic, derivă din numele latin al scorbutului, scorbutus, care oferă, de asemenea, scorbuticul adjectiv. Scurva se prezintă adesea inițial ca simptome de stare de rău și letargie, urmată de formarea petelor pe piele, a gingiilor spongioase și a sângerării din membranele mucoase. Spoturile sunt cele mai abundente pe coapse și picioare, iar o persoană cu afecțiune pare palidă, se simte deprimată și este parțial imobilizată. Scurvii au fost la un moment dat obișnuiți printre marinari, pirați și alții la bordul navelor aflate pe mare, mai mult decât fructele și legumele perisabile și ar putea fi stocate de soldați, de asemenea, lipsiți de aceste alimente pentru perioade lungi de timp. Acesta a fost descris de Hippocrates, iar tratamentele pe bază de plante pentru scorbut au fost cunoscute în multe culturi native încă din preistorie.
