Solid
Solidul este una dintre cele patru stări fundamentale ale materiei. Se caracterizează prin rigiditate structurală și rezistență la schimbări de formă sau volum. Spre deosebire de un lichid, un obiect solid nu curge să ia forma recipientului său, nici nu se extinde pentru a umple întregul volum disponibil pentru el ca un gaz. Atomii dintr-un solid sunt legați unul de celălalt, fie într-o rețea geometrică regulată, fie neregulat. Ramura fizicii care se ocupă cu substanțele solide se numește fizică solidă și este ramura principală a fizicii materiei condensate. Știința materialelor se referă în primul rând la proprietățile fizice și chimice ale substanțelor solide. Soliditatea chimică este în special preocupată de sinteza materialelor noi, precum și de știința identificării și a compoziției chimice.
