Un Spartan este o persoană din orașul grecesc Sparta sau orașul antic grecesc antic cu același nume. În ultimul context, termenul "Spartan", în sensul său cel mai tehnic, se referă la un membru al castăi Spartiate și, în anumite uzanțe, cuprinde și clasa morților, locuitorii din Sparta, care erau liberi, dar nu se bucurau de drepturi politice deplină. Substantivul propriu-zis "Spartan" se poate referi și la un membru al uneia dintre numeroasele echipe atletice numite după soldații vechiului Sparta, în special renumitul său infanterie de tip hoplite. Adjectivul "spartan" se referă la natura fructuoasă și austeră a spartanilor.
