Stoatul, cunoscut și sub denumirea de nevăstuică, este o specie de Mustelidae, originară din Eurasia și America de Nord, distinctă de cea mai mică nevăstuică, prin dimensiunea sa mai mare și coada lungă, cu un vârf negru proeminent. Denumirea ermine este adesea, dar nu întotdeauna, folosită pentru animal în haina de iarnă pur albă sau în blană. De la sfârșitul secolului al XIX-lea, în Noua Zeelandă au fost introduse zăpadă pentru a controla iepurii, dar au avut un efect devastator asupra populațiilor de păsări native. Acesta este clasificat de IUCN drept cel mai puțin preocupat, datorită distribuției sale circumpolare largi și deoarece nu se confruntă cu nici o amenințare semnificativă la supraviețuirea sa. Acesta a fost numit una dintre cele mai mari 100 de "cele mai grave specii invazive" din lume de către Grupul IUCN de Supraviețuire a Specii din cadrul IUCN. Bucătăria de lux ermine este adesea folosită de monarhi catolici, Pontifii și Cardinalii, care uneori o folosesc ca pelerina de mozetta și imagini devoționale, cum ar fi Isus pentru copii din Praga.
