O economie de subzistență este o economie nemonetară care se bazează pe resursele naturale pentru a satisface nevoile de bază, prin agricultura de vânătoare, adunare și subzistență. "Subzistență" înseamnă susținerea la un nivel minim; într-o economie de subzistență, excedentul economic este minim și este folosit doar pentru comerțul cu bunuri de bază și nu există nici o industrializare. În istoria lumii, înainte de primele orașe, toți oamenii trăiau într-o economie de subzistență. Pe măsură ce urbanizarea, civilizația și diviziunea muncii s-au răspândit, diferite societăți s-au mutat în alte sisteme economice în diferite vremuri. Unele rămân relativ neschimbate, variind de la popoare necontrate, până la zone sărace din țările în curs de dezvoltare, la anumite culturi care aleg să mențină o economie tradițională. Capitalul poate fi definit în general ca active investite în așteptarea creșterii valorii lor, de obicei pentru că există așteptări privind profitul, chiria, dobânda, redevențele, câștigul de capital sau alt fel de returnare.
