Sinod
Un sinod / sɪnəd / istoric este un consiliu al unei biserici, de obicei convocat pentru a decide o problemă de doctrină, administrare sau aplicare. În uzul modern, cuvântul se referă adesea la corpul de conducere al unei anumite biserici, indiferent dacă membrii săi se întâlnesc sau nu. De asemenea, uneori se face referire la o biserică care este condusă de un sinod. Cuvântul "sinod" vine de la "σύνοδος" grecesc, adică "adunare" sau "întâlnire", și este sinonim cu cuvântul latin "concilium", care înseamnă "consiliu". Inițial, sinoadele erau întâlniri ale episcopilor, iar cuvântul este încă folosit în acest sens în catolicism și Ortodoxie Răsăriteană. Uneori expresia "sinod general" sau "consiliu general" se referă la un consiliu ecumenic. Cuvântul "sinod" se referă, de asemenea, la consiliul permanent al episcopilor de rang înalt care guvernează unele dintre bisericile ortodoxe orientale autocefale. În mod similar, guvernarea zilnică a bisericilor catolice orientale patriarhale și majore arhiepiscopale este încredințată unui sinod permanent.
