From New Latin Utopia (coined by Sir Thomas More in 1516 as the title of his book that described an imaginary island representing the perfect society), literally: no place, from Greek ou not + topos a place.

Cuvântul a fost inventat de Sir Thomas Mai mult în limba latină pentru cartea lui Utopia din 1516, care descrie o societate fictivă a insulelor din Oceanul Atlantic. Termenul a fost folosit pentru a descrie atât comunitățile intenționate care încearcă să creeze o societate ideală, cât și societățile imaginare prezentate în ficțiune.
