Uzura este legată de interacțiunile dintre suprafețe și îndeosebi îndepărtarea și deformarea materialului pe o suprafață ca rezultat al acțiunii mecanice a suprafeței opuse. Nevoia de mișcare relativă între două suprafețe și contactul mecanic inițial între asperități este o diferență importantă între uzura mecanică în comparație cu alte procese cu rezultate similare. Definiția uzurii poate include pierderea dimensiunilor datorate deformării plastice, dacă aceasta are originea la interfața dintre două suprafețe alunecoase.
