Datorită înclinării axiale a Pământului, cursul unui an vede trecerea anotimpurilor, marcate de schimbări ale vremii, orelor de zi și, prin urmare, vegetație și fertilitate. În regiunile temperate și subpolare, în general, patru sezoane sunt recunoscute: primăvara, vara, toamna și iarna, marcate astronomic de Soare ajungând la punctele de echinocțiu și solstițiu, deși sezoanele climatice rămân în urmă în urma marcajelor lor astronomice.
