In der Politik und Geschichte ist eine Kolonie ein Territorium unter der unmittelbaren politischen Kontrolle eines Staates, der sich von dem Heimatland des Souveräns unterscheidet. Im Gegensatz zu einem Marionettenstaat oder einem Satellitenstaat hat eine Kolonie keine unabhängige internationale Vertretung, und ihre Top-Level-Verwaltung steht unter direkter Kontrolle des Metropolitangebots. Der Begriff der informellen Kolonie wird von einigen Historikern verwendet, um sich auf ein Land unter der De-facto-Kontrolle eines anderen Staates zu beziehen, obwohl dieser Begriff oft umstritten ist.
