A chiasma is a crossover of two chromatids of homologous chromosomes. In the prophase I of meiosis, the chromosomes are shortened so that they are visible by microscopy. The homologous chromosomes mate in the zygotene phase of this stage. They lie parallel to one another, so that they lie precisely next to one another with the corresponding genes. In some places, the thighs of paternal and maternal chromosome arms are crossed. In the diplomat of this prophase the parallel conjugation loosens and the points of the crossings are revealed cytologically. These places are called Chiasmata, they are the sequence of crossing-over.

Ein Chiasma ist eine Überkreuzung zweier Chromatiden homologer Chromosomen. In der Prophase I der Meiose kommt es zur Verkürzung der Chromosomen, so dass diese lichtmikroskopisch sichtbar werden. Die homologen Chromosomen paaren sich in der zygotänen Phase dieses Stadiums. Sie legen sich parallel aneinander, so dass sie mit den entsprechenden Genorten exakt nebeneinander liegen. An manchen Stellen überkreuzen sich die Schenkel von paternalen und maternalen Chromosomenarmen. Im Diplotän dieser Prophase lockert sich die Parallelkonjugation auf und die Stellen der Überkreuzungen werden zytologisch sichtbar. Diese Stellen nennt man Chiasmata, sie sind die Folge von Crossing-over.
