A miser is a person unwilling to spend money, and even gives up having basic comforts. In fiction, greed is often exaggerated to the point that the miser is a wealthy and greedy character who lives in misery in order to save and have more money. The character Ebenezer Scrooge by Dickens is an obvious example. A stereotype related to the miser is capitalist as represented in, for example, Soviet propaganda. The two stereotypes are usually businessmen, usually entrepreneurs or lenders, who possess great wealth but do not care about the lot of the poor. The difference is that, unlike the miser, the capitalist does spend money and is typically portrayed leading a decadent life. Anti-Semites have represented the Jews in both ways. The Scots, Dutch and Catalans are sometimes stereotyped as greedy. There is a work by Molière entitled The Miser who tells the story of an old miser, Harpagon, who wants his trunk of coins more than anything in the world, including his family. She, frustrated by her attitude, decides to hide her trunk.

Un avaro es una persona poco dispuesta a gastar dinero, e incluso renuncia a tener comodidades básicas. En la ficción, la avaricia se suele exagerar hasta el punto de que el avaro es un personaje tipo adinerado y codicioso que vive en la miseria con el fin de ahorrar y tener más dinero. El personaje Ebenezer Scrooge de Dickens es un ejemplo evidente. Un estereotipo relacionado con el de avaro es el capitalista tal como se representa en, por ejemplo, la propaganda soviética. Los dos estereotipos suelen ser hombres de negocios, normalmente empresarios o prestamistas, que poseen grandes riquezas pero no se preocupan por la suerte de los pobres. La diferencia es que, al contrario que el avaro, el capitalista sí gasta el dinero y es retratado típicamente llevando una vida decadente. Los antisemitas han representado a los judíos de ambas formas. Los escoceses, holandeses y catalanes son a veces estereotipados como avaros. Hay una obra de Molière titulada El avaro que narra la historia de un viejo avaro, Harpagon, que quiere a su baúl de monedas más que a nada en el mundo, incluida su familia. Esta, frustrada por su actitud, decide esconder su baúl.
