The Comanches are a native Amerindian tribe of the Comancheria. It is estimated that its maximum population amounted to 45,000 natives. Today, the Comanche Nation is constituted by approximately 10,000 members; About half reside in Oklahoma, and the rest in Texas, California, and New Mexico. There are several theories about the origin of the name Comanche. The most accepted is that it derives from Komantcia, a corruption of the Spanish of "Kohmahts", the name given by the Ute to the people. "Kohmahts" is translated several times as "enemy", "he who wants to fight", "against the one who is going to fight", or "foreigner". Alternatively, it may come from the Spanish broad way. The first French and American explorers knew the Comanche as the Padouca, their name in the Siouan language. The Comanches preferred to be called the Numunuu, which means "the People" or "the people." The Comanches speak an Uto-Aztec language, sometimes considered as a dialect of the Shoshone. However, most Comanches today speak English and the Comanche language only has a few hundred speakers.

Hoy, la Nación Comanche está constituida aproximadamente por 10.000 miembros; cerca de la mitad reside en Oklahoma, y, el resto, en Texas, California y Nuevo México. Hay varias teorías sobre el origen del nombre Comanche. La más aceptada es que deriva de Komantcia, una corrupción del Español de "Kohmahts", el nombre dado por los Ute a la gente. "Kohmahts" es traducido varias veces como "enemigo", "el que quiere luchar", "contra el que se va a luchar", o "extranjero". Alternativamente, puede venir del Español camino ancho.
