Lat. *
ammatteāre, de la *
mattea „băț, par”;
cf. it. ammazare „a omorî”,
sp. mazar, port. maçar. Sensul primar a fost „a lovi, a bate pînă la pierderea cunoștinței”, de unde mai tîrziu în
it. „a omorî”, și în
rom. „a lăsa, a rămîne fără cunoștință”. Schimbarea de
conjug. este firească la
vb. incoative. După Pușcariu,
ZRPh., XXXII, 717 și DAR, din
lat. *
ammatῑre, de la *
mattus, de unde
it. matto „nebun”,
ammattire „a înnebuni” (
cf. REW 5401 și 5428); însă în
rom. nu este atestat *
mattus, în timp ce *
mattea s-a păstrat,
cf. măciucă; în plus, evoluția semantică pare mai convingătoare. Hasdeu 1062 se gîndea la
ammitĕre, cf. Densusianu,
Rom.,XXXIII, 273; iar Körting 591 la *
amentio, imposibil din punct de vedere fonetic. –
