Une permutation est un arrangement d'objets dans un certain ordre en combinatoire. En fonction de la possibilité ou non de certains objets de se produire à plusieurs reprises, on parle d'une permutation avec répétition ou permutation sans répétition. Le nombre de permutations sans répétition est donné en tant que faculté, tandis que le nombre de permutations avec répétition est donné par des coefficients multinomiaux. Dans la théorie des groupes, une permutation sans répétition est une auto-cartographie bijective d'un ensemble généralement fini, les premiers nombres naturels étant habituellement utilisés comme quantités de référence. L'ensemble des permutations des premiers nombres naturels forme le groupe symétrique du degré en tant que liaison. L'élément neutre de ce groupe représente la permutation identique, tandis que l'élément inverse est la permutation inverse. Les sous-groupes du groupe symétrique sont les groupes de permutation. Les principales variables clés des permutations sont leur type cyclique, leur ordre et leur signe.
