Buttonquail
Buttonquail ou hemipodes sont membres d'une petite famille d'oiseaux, Turnicidae, qui ressemblent, mais ne sont pas liés à, les cailles de Phasianidae. Ils habitent des prairies chaudes en Asie, en Afrique, en Europe et en Australie. Il existe 16 espèces en deux genres, la plupart des espèces étant trouvées dans le genre Turnix et une seule étant trouvée dans le genre Ortyxelos. Les boutons sont petits, clairs et courants, qui évitent de voler. La femelle est la plus colorée des sexes et initie la parade. D'une manière inhabituelle, les boutonnières sont polyandres, les femelles circulant parmi plusieurs hommes et expulsant des femelles rivales de son territoire. Les deux sexes coopèrent dans la construction d'un nid sur terre, mais seul l'homme incube les œufs et tend le jeune. Les œufs éclosent après une période d'incubation de 12 ou 13 jours, et les jeunes peuvent voler dans les deux semaines suivant l'éclosion.
