Le paradoxe de Cantor
Dans la théorie des ensembles, le paradoxe de Cantor est dérivant du théorème qu'il n'y a pas de plus grand nombre cardinal, de sorte que la collection des «dimensions infinies» est elle-même infinie. La difficulté est traitée dans la théorie axiomatique des ensembles en déclarant que cette collection n'est pas un ensemble mais une classe appropriée; Dans la théorie des ensembles de von Neumann-Bernays-Gödel, il découle de ceci et de l'axiome de limitation de taille que cette classe doit être en bijection avec la classe de tous les ensembles. Ainsi, non seulement il y a infiniment d'infinités, mais cette infinité est plus grande que l'une des infinités qu'elle énumère. Ce paradoxe est nommé pour Georg Cantor, qui a souvent été identifié pour l'identifier en 1899. À l'instar d'un certain nombre de «paradoxes», il n'est pas contradictoire, mais simplement une intuition erronée, en l'occurrence la nature de l'infini et la notion D'un ensemble. Dans un autre sens, il est paradoxal dans les limites de la théorie des ensembles naïfs et démontre ainsi qu'une axiomatisation imprudente de cette théorie est incohérente.
