Un ciment est un liant, une substance qui se couche et durcit à mesure que le ciment sèche et réagit avec le dioxyde de carbone dans l'air de manière dépendante et peut lier d'autres matériaux ensemble. Le mot «ciment» traça aux Romains, qui ont utilisé le terme opus caementicium pour décrire la maçonnerie ressemblant au béton moderne qui a été fabriqué à partir de roche concassée avec de la chaux brûlée comme liant.
