Constitution
Une constitution est un ensemble de principes fondamentaux ou de précédents établis selon lesquels un État ou une autre organisation est gouvernée. Ces règles constituent ensemble, c'est-à-dire constituent ce que l'entité est. Lorsque ces principes sont inscrits dans un document unique ou un ensemble de documents juridiques, ces documents peuvent contenir une constitution écrite; S'ils sont écrits dans un seul document complet, il est dit qu'il comporte une constitution codifiée. Les constitutions concernent différents niveaux d'organisations, des États souverains aux entreprises et aux associations non constituées en société. Un traité qui établit une organisation internationale est aussi sa constitution, dans la mesure où elle définira la manière dont cette organisation est constituée. Dans les États, une constitution définit les principes sur lesquels l'état est fondé, la procédure dans laquelle les lois sont prises et par qui. Certaines constitutions, en particulier les constitutions codifiées, agissent également comme limiteurs du pouvoir de l'Etat, en établissant des lignes que les dirigeants d'un Etat ne peuvent pas traverser, comme les droits fondamentaux. Un exemple est la constitution des États-Unis d'Amérique.
