Le discours indique les communications écrites et parlées telles que: ▪ En sémantique et en analyse du discours: une généralisation du concept de conversation dans toutes les modalités et contextes. ▪ La totalité du langage codifié utilisé dans un domaine donné d'enquête intellectuelle et de pratique sociale, comme le discours juridique, le discours médical, le discours religieux, et cetera. ▪ Dans l'œuvre de Michel Foucault, et celle des théoriciens sociaux qu'il a inspirés: le discours décrit «une entité de séquences, de signes, en ce sens qu'ils sont des énoncés». Un énoncé n'est pas une unité de signes sémiotiques, mais une construction abstraite qui permet aux signes d'assigner et de communiquer des relations spécifiques et reproductibles entre, entre objets, sujets et déclarations. Par conséquent, un discours se compose de séquences sémiotiques entre objets, sujets et déclarations. Le terme formation discursive décrit de manière conceptuelle les communications régulières qui produisent de tels discours. En tant que philosophe, Foucault a appliqué la formation discursive dans les analyses de grands corps de connaissances, tels que l'économie politique et l'histoire naturelle.
