Faïence
La faïence est le terme général pour la poterie qui n'est pas la porcelaine ou d'autres types spécifiques tels que les frittes ou les grès. Il est, ou peut-être, être tiré à des températures relativement basses et la vitrification n'a pas lieu, laissant le corps légèrement poreux. Jusqu'à ce que la porcelaine devienne très largement utilisée dans la période moderne, la grande majorité des poteries dès les premiers temps étaient des types classés en faïence. La faïence au fourneau remonte à 29 000 à 25 000 avant J.-C. La porcelaine a commencé à être fabriquée en dehors de l'Asie de l'Est au XVIIIe siècle, puis comme un luxe coûteux. Contrairement à la porcelaine, la faïence n'est pas translucide, et il est généralement relativement épais et très lourd. Il est beaucoup plus facile à fabriquer que la porcelaine, car une large gamme d'argiles peut être utilisée, et elle tolère beaucoup les températures de tir faibles et variables. La plupart des machines modernes et la poterie amateur est la faïence. Après le tir, le corps est poreux et opaque, et selon les matières premières utilisées sera coloré du blanc au buff au rouge. Les articles en faïence peuvent parfois être aussi minces que la porcelaine et autres porcelaine, mais ils ne sont pas translucides et sont plus facilement ébréchés.
