Extrusion
Extrusion est un processus utilisé pour créer des objets d'un profil en coupe transversale fixe. Un matériau est poussé ou tracé à travers une matrice de la section transversale souhaitée. Les deux principaux avantages de ce processus par rapport aux autres procédés de fabrication sont la capacité de créer des sections transversales très complexes et de travailler des matériaux fragiles, car le matériau ne rencontre que des contraintes de compression et de cisaillement. Il forme également des pièces finies avec une excellente finition de surface. L'extrusion peut être continue ou semi-continue. Le processus d'extrusion peut se faire avec le matériau chaud ou froid. Les matériaux couramment extrudés comprennent les métaux, les polymères, la céramique, le béton, la pâte et les denrées alimentaires. Les produits d'extrusion sont généralement appelés «extrudats». Les cavités creuses dans le matériau extrudé ne peuvent être produites à l'aide d'une simple extrusion à plat, car il n'y aurait aucun moyen de supporter la barrière centrale de la matrice. Au lieu de cela, la matrice prend la forme d'un bloc avec une profondeur, commençant d'abord avec un profil de forme qui prend en charge la section centrale. La forme de la matrice change ensuite intérieurement sur sa longueur en forme finale, les pièces centrales suspendues étant supportées à l'arrière de la matrice.
