Une avance est un conducteur utilisé pour transporter un signal à travers une enceinte ou une carte de circuit imprimé. Comme n'importe quel conducteur, il a une petite quantité de capacité. Un «condensateur de transmission» a une valeur minimale garantie de la capacité de dérivation intégrée et est utilisé pour le contournement dans des applications ultra-haute fréquence. Une connexion électrique traversante peut résister à une différence de pression considérable sur toute sa longueur. Les systèmes qui fonctionnent sous vide poussé, comme les microscopes électroniques, nécessitent des connexions électriques à travers le récipient sous pression. De même, les véhicules submersibles nécessitent des connexions entre les instruments extérieurs et les dispositifs et les commandes dans la coque de pression du véhicule.
