Fructification
La fructification est la partie générative de la plante. Parfois, il est appliqué plus largement aux parties génératives des gymnospermes, des fougères, des colombes et des lycophytes, bien qu'ils ne produisent ni fruits ni fleurs. Depuis les travaux d'Andrea Caesalpino, les caractères de la fructification ont été largement utilisés comme base pour la classification scientifique des plantes. Carolus Linnaeus a relevé la description des parties de la fructification à un niveau de précision sans précédent. Il a insisté sur le fait que les genres et les groupes supérieurs de plantes doivent être caractérisés uniquement par la fructification sans utiliser de parties végétatives. À cette époque, on croyait que toutes les plantes avaient des fleurs et des fruits. Ce n'est qu'au dix-neuvième siècle que la différence importante entre les graines et les spores a été reconnue et l'utilisation des termes fleur et fruit était limitée aux plantes à fleurs. Plus tard, les taxonomistes des plantes ont utilisé une approche plus équilibrée et ont réintroduit l'utilisation des parties végétatives de la plante comme base pour les personnages à différents niveaux de la hiérarchie taxonomique.
