L'hypothèse de Gaia
L'hypothèse de Gaia, également connue sous le nom de théorie de Gaia ou du principe de Gaia, propose que les organismes interagissent avec leur environnement inorganique sur Terre pour former un système autonome et complexe qui contribue à maintenir les conditions de vie sur la planète. Les sujets d'intérêt comprennent la façon dont la biosphère et l'évolution des formes de vie affectent la stabilité de la température globale, la salinité de l'océan, l'oxygène dans l'atmosphère et d'autres variables environnementales qui affectent l'habitabilité de la Terre. L'hypothèse, qui s'appelle la déesse grecque Gaïa, a été formulée par le scientifique James Lovelock et co-développée par la microbiologiste Lynn Margulis dans les années 1970.
