Grenadier
Un grenadier était à l'origine un soldat spécialisé, créé pour la première fois comme un rôle distinct dans le milieu à la fin du 17ème siècle, pour le lancement de grenades et parfois d'assaut. À cette époque, les grenadiers étaient choisis parmi les soldats les plus forts et les plus grands. Au 18ème siècle, le lancement des grenades n'était plus pertinent, mais les grenadiers étaient encore choisis pour être les soldats les plus physiquement puissants et conduiraient des assauts dans le champ de bataille. Les grenadiers conduiraient également souvent à l'assaut des brèches de fortification dans la guerre de siège, bien que ce rôle soit plus généralement rempli par des unités de volontaires de tous les bras, appelés espoirs abandonnés, et pourraient également être remplis par des sapeurs ou des pionniers. Certains pays comme la France et l'Argentine ont créé des unités de Grenadiers des Chevaux et, pendant un certain temps, l'armée britannique avait des gardes-greniers de chevaux. Comme leurs homologues de grenadiers d'infanterie, ces soldats à cheval ont été choisis pour leur taille et leur force.
