Grotesque
Le mot grotesque provient de la même racine latine que «grotto», qui provient du «lieu caché» du krypte grec, c'est-à-dire une petite grotte ou un creux. Le sens original était restreint à un style extravagant d'art décoratif romain antique redécouvert et ensuite copié à Rome à la fin du 15ème siècle. Les «grottes» étaient en fait des salles et des couloirs de la Domus Aurea, le complexe du palais inachevé a commencé par Néron après le Grand Feu de Rome en 64 AD, qui était devenu envahie et enterrée, jusqu'à ce qu'ils soient tombés à nouveau, principalement par le haut. S'étalant de l'italien vers les autres langues européennes, le terme a longtemps été utilisé en grande partie avec l'arabesque et le moresque pour les types de motifs décoratifs en utilisant des éléments de feuillage courbe. Depuis au moins le 18ème siècle, le grotesque a été utilisé comme adjectif général pour l'étrange, fantastique, laid, incongrue, désagréable ou dégoûtant, et est donc souvent utilisé pour décrire des formes étranges et des formes déformées comme les masques de Halloween.
