Hermeneutics / hɜrmənjuːtɪks / est la théorie de l'interprétation du texte, en particulier l'interprétation des textes bibliques, de la littérature de la sagesse et des textes philosophiques. Les termes "herméneutique" et "exégèse" sont parfois utilisés indifféremment. L'herméneutique est une discipline plus large qui comprend la communication écrite, verbale et non verbale. L'exégèse se concentre principalement sur les textes. L'herméneutique, en tant que singulier, se réfère à une seule méthode particulière ou à une interprétation particulière. La compréhension de tout texte écrit exige de l'herméneutique. L'herméneutique s'appliquait initialement à l'interprétation, ou à l'exégèse, de l'Écriture. Il a émergé comme une théorie de la compréhension humaine commençant à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe siècle à travers les travaux de Friedrich Schleiermacher et Wilhelm Dilthey. L'herméneutique moderne comprend la communication verbale et non verbale ainsi que la sémiotique, les présuppositions et les préentendus. La cohérence herméneutique se réfère à l'analyse des textes pour en arriver à une explication cohérente.
