Les tricots constituent un genre, Sitta, de petits oiseaux passereaux appartenant à la famille Sittidae. Caractérisés par de grandes têtes, des queues courtes et des factures et des pieds puissants, les ornithologues annoncent leur territoire en utilisant des chansons fortes et simples. La plupart des espèces présentent des parties supérieures grises ou bleutées et une bande d'oeil noir. La plupart des nids de noix se reproduisent dans les terres tempérées ou montanes de l'hémisphère nord, bien que deux espèces se soient adaptées aux habitats rocheux dans les régions plus chaudes et plus sèches de l'Eurasie. Cependant, la plus grande diversité est en Asie du Sud, et les similitudes entre les espèces ont rendu difficile l'identification d'espèces distinctes. Tous les membres de ce genre nichent dans des trous ou des crevasses. La plupart des espèces ne sont pas migratrices et vivent dans leur habitat tout au long de l'année, bien que le tronc de veau rouge nord-américain migre vers des régions plus chaudes pendant l'hiver. Quelques espèces de tricottage ont une portée restreinte et font face à des menaces provenant de la déforestation. Les nuthatches sont omnivores, mangeant principalement des insectes, des noix et des graines. Ils se nourrissent d'insectes cachés dans ou sous l'écorce en grimpant le long des troncs d'arbres et des branches, parfois à l'envers.
