En termes juridiques, un moyen est simplement une réponse à une réclamation faite par quelqu'un dans une affaire criminelle en vertu de la common law en utilisant le système contradictoire. De façon familière, un plaidoyer a signifié l'affirmation d'un défendeur lors d'un procès ou autrement en réponse à une accusation criminelle, que cette personne ait plaidé coupable, non coupable, pas de contestation ou de plaidoyer d'Alford.
