Queer
Queer est un terme générique pour les minorités sexuelles et de genre qui ne sont pas hétérosexuelles, ni le genre-binaire. À l'origine signifiant étrange ou particulier, étrange a développé un usage comme terme péjoratif pour les homosexuels à la fin du 19ème siècle. À partir de la fin des années 1980, certains groupes LGBT politiques et sociaux ont commencé à se réapproprier le mot pour établir la communauté et affirmer une identité politique, en devenant le terme privilégié pour décrire certaines disciplines académiques et en utilisant comme descripteur des identités non hétérosexuelles. Queer peut être utilisé par ceux qui rejettent les identités de genre traditionnelles comme une alternative plus large, moins conforme et délibérément ambiguë à LGBT. Le terme est maintenant utilisé au nom de certaines disciplines académiques, telles que la théorie étrange, pour désigner une opposition générale à la pensée binaire. Les arts québécois, les groupes culturels étranges et les groupes politiques étranges sont des exemples d'expressions d'identités étranges. Les critiques du genre étrange incluent ceux qui associent le terme à son usage péjoratif et ceux qui l'associent au radicalisme politique.
