La rate synthétise les anticorps dans sa pâte blanche et élimine les bactéries enduites d'anticorps et les cellules sanguines revêtues d'anticorps au moyen du sang et de la circulation des ganglions lymphatiques. Une étude publiée en 2009 à l'aide de souris a révélé que la rate contient, dans sa réserve, la moitié des monocytes du corps dans la pulpe rouge. Ces monocytes, lorsqu'ils se déplacent vers un tissu blessé, se transforment en cellules dendritiques et en macrophages tout en favorisant la cicatrisation tissulaire.
