Aster – rodzaj roślin nasiennych należących do rodziny astrowatych, obecnie zaliczane jest do niego około 250 gatunków. Naturalnie występują na półkuli północnej, na obszarach o umiarkowanym klimacie. Wiele z nich to rośliny ozdobne, chętnie uprawiane w ogrodach ze względu na dekoracyjne kwiaty. Obecnie rodzaj aster przeważnie ogranicza się do gatunków tzw. starego świata, z typowym przedstawicielem astrem gawędką. Astry amerykańskie zostały sklasyfikowane do rodzajów: Almutaster, Canadanthus, Doellingeria, Eucephalus, Eurybia, Ionactis, Oligoneuron, Oreostemma, Sericocarpus i Symphyotrichum, nadal jednak stosowana jest wobec nich łącznie nazwa zwyczajowa "astry". Nazwa rodzajowa Aster pochodzi od starogreckiego słowa ἀστήρ, co znaczy "gwiazda". Nawiązuje ona do gwiaździstego kształtu koszyczka kwiatowego.
